Windmill Hill Trust

Windmill virtual tour

The Windmill at Windmill Hill has stood proud over this pretty hilltop village in in East Sussex since 1814. By the start of WW1 the mill had ceased working and eventually fell into a state of disrepair until the Windmill Hill Windmill Trust was setup in 1990 to oversee its restoration. Following the restoration the Windmill is now fully operational, not only milling flour once again but it is now also open to the public.

With no way to provide physical access to the Windmills upper floors for visitors with limited mobility, or those who simply don’t fancy climbing the steep ladders, The Windmill Hill Windmill Trust commissioned Pan 3Sixty to create a 360° virtual tour  provide all their visitors with the opportunity to look round the Windmill in detail.

After a recce of the Windmill, we worked closely with the client to ensure the 360° virtual tour we produced clearly showed the milling process from the grain bin floor at the top of the Windmill, through the stone floor where the grain is ground between the mill stones, and down to the meal floor where the flour is bagged.

Pop-up information points highlight key pieces of equipment throughout the Windmill and explain what part they play in the milling process. Other information points include photographs from the restoration of the mill, highlighting small details which visitors may otherwise overlook.

The virtual tour is installed on a touch screen tablet that is mounted on an articulated arm in the exhibition area on the ground floor. The articulated arm enables visitors to view the 360° virtual tour whilst standing or seated, whichever they find most comfortable.

Enabling some members of the public to visit our restored windmill has always been a challenge as the steps to the upper floors are steep and difficult to negotiate. After exploring a number of ways to create a 360° virtual tour that would allow people to experience the mill in a manner similar to taking part in a guided tour, we selected Pan 3Sixty’s proposal to create a bespoke virtual tour displayed on a touch screen kiosk situated on the ground floor.

The customer service was good throughout with Pan 3Sixty keeping us informed of progress at each stage of work and also helping to fix technical issues we encountered with the articulated arm for mounting the touch screen.

The quality of the finished images is wonderful and the virtual tour does exactly what we had hoped. The end result is first class and and it has been an immediate hit with our visitors who absolutely love it!
