360° Virtual tour to improve visitor access at Dover Castle

To enable visitors with limited mobility to view the Fire Command Post and Port War Signal Station at Dover Castle, English Heritage commissioned Pan 3Sixty to create a 360° virtual tour.

With two interactive floor-plans and eight high resolution 360° panoramas, the virtual tour enables visitors to explore each room in fantastic detail. At the same time, a single 360° Gigapixel panorama from the Signal platform shows the view over the Straights of Dover with the coast of France clearly visible in the distance.

Multiple pop-up information points in each panorama provide you with the same information and displays that you see when visiting each room in person; these include information displays, exhibits, dioramas, audio exhibits and original features and equipment from the period.

Touch screen tablet

The finished 360° virtual tour is installed on a touch screen tablet so English Heritage volunteers can hand it to the visitors on request. Working in this way, volunteers can help the visitor to look round the virtual tour, or if they wish, the visitor can look round the Fire Command Post & Port War Signal Station on their own and at their own pace.

Audio update

After six months of real-world testing at the Fire Command Post & Port War Signal Station, English Heritage and Pan 3Sixty re-evaluated the virtual tour. Further to the feedback received, an audio narration was incorporated into the virtual tour to help visitors with visual impairments. With the scripts created and edited, the voice overs were professionally recorded, and the user interface updated. With the new version of the Fire Command Post and Port War Signal Station 360° virtual tour installed on the tablet, English Heritage volunteers are ready to assist visitors so everyone can view the attraction.

From first contact Pan 3Sixty were extremely responsive and very helpful. Following our request for a 360° virtual tour to provide alternative access to the Fire Command Post and Port War Signal Station at Dover Castle for visitors with limited mobility, it was clear that Pan 3Sixty had a thorough understating of what was required. They quickly proposed a solution that not only met our every requirement but also included additional features that they thought relevant the project, such as a Gigapixel panorama from the Signal Platform to provide a more highly detailed view of the Dover coastline including the view across the Channel in which the French coastline is also clearly visible.

Working closely with myself and other English Heritage colleagues, the virtual tour was created to an exceptionally high standard, both photographically and design wise, and delivered to meet a tight deadline. We now have a great resource available to ensure all our visitors, regardless of mobility, can see the at the Fire Command Post and Port War Signal Station, including all the exhibitions and interpretation.

The 360° virtual tour, and in particular the high quality of the panoramas, was highly praised by colleagues within English Heritage and I would have no hesitation in recommending Pan 3Sixty throughout the organisation to other museum and heritage attractions.
