The Old Operating Theatre Trust

The Old Operating Theatre & Herb Garret Virtual Tour

Housed in the attic of the 18th century church of the old St Thomas’ Hospital, the Old Operating Theatre Museum provides a unique insight into the history of medicine and surgery, with the operating theatre itself being the oldest surviving surgical theatre in Europe.

Restricted by the location, the only access to the Museum is via a narrow spiral staircase. In order to improve visitor access to the museum, the Trust commissioned Pan 3Sixty to create a ‘virtual museum’ that can be viewed by  visitors who are unable to visit the museum in person.

The end result was a series of high resolution 360° panoramas of the museum, embedded into a simple user interface and installed on a touch screen tablet. With no suitable location to install a free standing kiosk, a touch screen tablet was the most viable solution for delivering the virtual tour and is provided to visitors on request.

Visitors who are unable to access the museum in person can now be guided round the virtual museum by a staff member, exploring and learning about this unique attraction.
