With new customers unsure of what to expect when booking on the Caledonian Sleeper, ScotRail commissioned Pan 3Sixty to produce a 360º virtual tour of the train. The resulting 360º panoramas provide customers with a great view of the single and twin berth cabins, specially adapted accessible cabins for disabled passengers, seated accommodation and also the lounge car where passengers can relax with a drink and a meal.

The response to the online version of the tour was an overwhelming success, with ScotRail subsequently commissioning an offline version that they distributed to potential clients via USB flash drives, further widening the reach of the virtual tour.

When the Caledonian Sleeper service was taken over by Serco, the virtual tour was re-licensed by the new owners. Following the creation of a new user interface in-line with the Serco Caledonian Sleeper brand, and retouching the 360° panorama to remove any ScotRail branding, the train virtual tour was re-launched. Once once again it proved proved to be extremely popular with customers with over 90,000 unique views per year.

Research showed one of the main obstacles in getting customers to make a booking on the Caledonian Sleeper was a lack of ‘tangible information’ showing the services on offer and what our customers could expect. After researching the options, we decided to get a 360º virtual tour produced to showcase this unique rail service and we couldn’t be more pleased with the result.
