Ballista Digital

First World War trench virtual tour

When Ballista Digital, a digital media agency specialising in military history projects, approached us to create a couple of virtual tours for the Wales at War projects, we leaped at the opportunity.

Having seen the virtual tour we created of the trench and tunnel excavations on the Somme battlefields for La Boisselle Study Group, Ballista commissioned us to create a virtual tour of a replica trench created by renowned first world war historian Andy Robertshaw.

Photographing in muddy and confined conditions proved to be an interesting experience and provided us with a few technical issues to overcome. Once back in the studio the we undertook extensive retouching work on the panoramas to remove the buildings, trees and countryside outside of the ‘trench area’ so as not to spoil the illusion of being immersed in an actual first world war trench. Click here to see ‘before and after’ panraomas of the retouching work.

The finished 360° panoramas were delivered to Ballista, where their in-house developers added pop-up information points detailing what trench life was like for a front line soldier, and the equipment they used.
