‘Deep zoom’ gigapixel panoramas

A gigapixel panorama is a panorama containing more than one billion pixels, or 1000 megapixels. Created from hundreds or thousands of individual photographs, the level of detail in a gigapixel panorama can easily surpass that seen by the human eye. Beyond immersing viewers deep within the scene and satisfying a natural curiosity to explore it in minute detail, gigapixel panoramas open up a host of new opportunities to engage and interact with your brand for longer.

Pan 3Sixty created a gigapixel virtual tour for a Switzerland Tourism summer marketing campaign. Comprising of seven must-see views from across Switzerland, the virtual tour incorporated several features to engage the viewer for longer. These included a ‘find the mascot’ competition to capture viewer data for future marketing campaigns, a send a postcard feature, social media sharing, and numerous pop-up information points highlighting places and attractions to visit when on holiday.

As part of the Canon Pro Solution show held at Olympia in London, Canon commissioned Pan 3Sixty to create two gigapixel panoramas of the London skyline to form an exhibit promoting the new 300mm f2.8L II lens and ultra-high-resolution photography.

Printed 9 meters wide by 2 meters high and hung side by side in a 270° circular display with a circumference of just over 25 meters, the exhibit formed an integral part of the Canon Pro Solutions show, attracting the views of many thousands of visitors who attended the show.

English Heritage

The view over Dover Harbour, across the English Channel to the coastline of Franch beyond, is the very reason that The Fire Command Post & Port War Signal Station at Dover Castle exists. When English Heritage commissioned us to create a 360° virtual tour to improve accessibility to the attraction, we suggested creating a gigapixel panorama of the view from the Signal Platform to help highlight the purpose and location of the Signal Station itself. Photographed on a clear day when visibility was high, the extra resolution provides you with a clear view across the Channel to France, with details such as shipping and Calais clearly visible.

Goldsmiths’ Hall

The Livery Hall at Goldsmiths’ Hall is a richly decorated feast for the eyes. With so many beautiful details to see in every direction, when we photographed the hall following a major refurbishment, it only made sense to show the room off in great detail. At more than four times the size of the other 360° panoramas in the Goldsmiths’ Hall virtual tour, the gigapixel panorama of the Livery Hall shows every little intricate detail. From the beautifully crafted items displayed in the Modern Plate, to the four matching chandeliers, to the stained glass window, you can zoom in to see every last detail.
