The Rural Discovery Church is an integral part of the parish church, situated on a hill overlooking the River Blackwater.

The panoramic view extends from Mersea on the north shore round to Maldon and Mayland to the west. On the lower land on the south shore, the more modern of St. Lawrence may be seen.

During the summer months exhibitions are held in the church utilising display boards which in no way detract from the normal functions of the building. The themes of these displays vary, but there is always a strong local flavour. Topics such as farming, buildings, household life, the story of Osea Island, waterborne trade, barges, yachting and many more have been covered by extensive photographic and documentary displays, frequently supplemented by relevant items loaned for the exhibition.

At the end of August the very successful art exhibition takes over for about six weeks. This has grown considerably over the past twelve years and attracts artists and visitors from a wide area.
