The museum is a state registered charity housing a collection of British
military artefacts. A number of items on display are of national importance.
A good example is the only surviving MK2 ‘Cockle’ canoe and other equipment used
in the “Cockleshell Heroes” raid.
There is an excellent display of Civil War armour, as well as fully equipped
models of paratroopers from Arnhem, Suez and the Falklands. The main weapons
employed by the army are exhibited, from Civil War swords to anti-aircraft and
anti-tank armour. A complete example of a Chieftain Tank is an imposing exhibit
in the museum grounds alongside an armoured Iraqi Personnel Carrier, captured
during the first Gulf War and a Thunderbird Missile.
The museum also holds rare RAF survival and escape equipment in addition to an
extensive collection of aircraft munitions. A significant feature of the
collection is a TSR2 jet engine, the only remaining example on public display.
A variety of personal documents focus on the social history of warfare and the
conditions endured both at home and abroad.
Clandestine equipment used by the Secret Services forms a fascinating display,
and includes the account written by the real “Q” of James Bond fame regarding
the birth of MI9.
Opening times:
Wednesday – Sunday 10.30 am – 5.00 pm (open Bank Holiday Mondays). The Museum is
open at other times to pre-booked schools and groups.
