The Maeldune Centre has its origins in a turbulent period in English History over one thousand years ago when the fate of Anglo-Saxon England lay in the balance under the onslaught of the Danish invaders. In AD991, the Earldorman Byrthnoth fought a ferocious battle at Maldon in an attempt to save his fellow countrymen from the Danes. Although he was killed, his heroism lives on in a famous Anglo-Saxon poem and also in the 42ft long Maldon Embroidery which was created 1000 years later to celebrate this Battle and depicts the history of Maldon from 991 – 1991.
