Room 61 Left

As the war continued pressure on accommodation in the underground complex grew and most of the rooms off the main corridor had to be divided to allow more and more personnel to be housed. The first small room, Room 60 Left, housed the outside broadcasting equipment that the BBC installed at the outbreak of the war.

This equipment enabled the Prime Minister to speak to the people of Great Britain, the Commonwealth and occupied Europe. In 1940-41 Churchill delivered four major speeches from the office-bedroom further along the corridor – these were then relayed from the equipment in Room 60 Left to the outside world.
